Publishing underwater photography on a website: Copyright and ethical guidance

Image permissions, proper attribution and ethical guidelines for underwater photographers, divers and dive centres.

The image can be an artifact as well as a souvenir

It is necessary to determine from the beginning who the photographs taken on the dive boat or underwater belong to and where they can be used. Just because the photo has been shared on social media does not automatically give permission to use it in another institution's advertisement. The dive center must clarify the scope of the copyright with the photographer.

Three separate recordings

Copyright: Who took the photo. Scope of permission: Which channels we can use, such as website, social media, catalogue, and for what period of time. Persons in the image: Necessary process regarding the use of personal data and images if there are recognizable guests. These three issues cannot be reduced to a single assumption: "He sent the photo from WhatsApp, we can use it."

Accuracy in archive description

If the place where a photo was taken is unknown, it would be misleading to name it an exact diving spot. If the shooting date and the sharing date are different, they should be stated separately. If the species description is uncertain, this uncertainty should be preserved in the photo description.

The same sensitivity in the press archive

Showing the title, date and link to the source of a news story is one thing; Copying the full text or photo of the news without permission is one thing. It should be preferred to prepare original short summaries from the press and link to the source. If necessary, a visual license is obtained separately.

Information to be conveyed when sharing photos

Please provide the photographer's name, shooting date and location information along with the photo you want to share. Please specify on which channels you allow us to share the image. Saying that the missing information is unknown instead of guessing will help keep the archive accurate.
