Octopus and Other Cephalopods: Ethics of Observation in the Aegean

Octopus and Other Cephalopods: Ethics of Observation in the Aegean. Explore diving culture, preparation and marine life around Çandarlı in the Northern Aegean.

A very different group of creatures

Octopus, cuttlefish and squid are in the "cephalopod" group (Cephalopoda) of invertebrate marine creatures. In the 2014 trawl survey of Çandarlı Bay, cephalopod group, apart from fish, was also reported in the catch composition. However, the total rate quoted here does not mean that they will always be seen during dives.

Watching their behavior without changing it

An octopus resting in a cave or a cuttlefish changing color may be interesting. However, tampering with the cavity for photography, handling the creature, or directing it to the feed makes the observation unnatural and may harm the animal.

Accuracy in local live gallery

The quality of the image, location of encounter, and expert control may be important for distinguishing the species. The Deep Dive gallery should use the correct label, such as “cephalopod – awaiting species confirmation” when the exact species name has not been determined.

Being patient underwater

Staying quiet and controlled in the water increases harmony with teammates and affects the behavior of creatures less. It's important to know that getting closer for a photo doesn't always yield better results.
