Two faces of Çandarlı
It would be an understatement to think of Çandarlı as just a diving port. The settlement, known by its ancient name Pitane, is a part of the coastal geography that bears traces from different periods. Çandarlı Castle is one of the symbols of these historical layers that can still be seen today.
Traces of the castle and maritime trade
According to the statement of the Izmir Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism, Çandarlı Castle was included in the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List in 2013 within the scope of multiple nominations in the context of Genoese trade routes. This does not mean that the castle has been accepted into the permanent World Heritage List. The environment, which has been associated with coastal defense and trade throughout history, also increases underwater curiosity.
Seeing history does not give license for archaeological diving
Knowing that there are antiquities on the shore does not justify searching for, touching, or collecting underwater artifacts or marking their location on a public map. Underwater cultural assets and diving permits must be protected in accordance with the relevant legislation.
Adding a cultural route to your dive day
Enjoying the sea air of the morning at Çandarlı and exploring the castle surroundings with a coastal walk can enrich the experience of visitors to the region. The dive center does not automatically include this walk in its diving program; visitors can plan independently.
