What should the underwater photographer document in Çandarlı?

Ways to keep accurate records of habitat, light, species and location when photographing underwater in Çandarlı.

The difference between a beautiful shot and a valuable recording

An underwater photograph can impress the viewer; but additional information is required to understand what it shows years later. The shooting date, shore or diving point name, estimated underwater habitat, equipment and, if possible, the verified creature name enrich the photograph in terms of both art and archive. Environmental sensitivity and permitting requirements of shared coordinates should also be considered.

What does SUFOD's 2019 Çandarlı invitation teach us?

In the announcement of the Underwater Photographers and Filmmakers Association dated July 22, 2019, Sırrı Özşen's request to evaluate photographs and videos for promotion, exhibition or book works was conveyed. This historical call shows how archiving images contributes to the memory of a destination. Temporary accommodation or diving conditions in the announcement should not be used as an updated offer.

Rocky areas and macro life

Wide angle photography can convey the rock texture and the feeling of the water column. Close-up shots can draw attention to the details of sponges, algae, invertebrates or small creatures. When the species cannot be determined, it is important not to write the wrong name under the photo. It is not right to turn stones, move or feed the creature in order to expose it for macro photography.

Three permits before starting work

The operation permit of the diving center, the rules of the area where photographs can be taken and the right to publish the image are different from each other. Permission to use the photographer on the website, social media and promotional prints may be requested separately. The copyright owner must be specified and the image removal request must be managed when necessary.

Deep Diving Underwater Archive

The gallery category system we propose will use the titles “Rock Landscapes”, “Living Creatures”, “People and Sea”, “Shots from the Past” and “Photographer Portraits”. At least the year of shooting, source and permission status will be included under the photographs. Thus, Çandarlı's underwater legacy becomes an annotated visual memory rather than a random pile of images.
