Seagrass meadows in Çandarlı: What do official monitoring data say?

Scientific significance of Posidonia seagrass meadows along the coasts Çandarlı and Dikili and observations included in official monitoring reports.

like a forest under water

Those who see pieces of leaves accumulated on the shore may confuse seagrass with seaweed. However, Posidonia oceanica is a flowering sea plant. It clings to the seabed with its root and rhizome structures; The habitat it creates contributes to the feeding and sheltering relationships of many fish and invertebrates. It is also important in terms of carbon storage in the long term.

Is there information specific to Çandarlı?

Yes, but you need to read it carefully. Seagrass observations along the coasts of Dikili and Çandarlı are included in the Aegean Sea 2014–2019 monitoring summary of the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change. The report states that some Posidonia areas are found in clusters in Çandarlı and that epiphyte/sediment cover is observed at some stations. This scientific framework does not allow us to say that the entire Çandarlı Bay floor is covered by a continuous grassland.

Why are they sensitive?

Anchor and chain dragging on the bottom, inappropriate coastal interventions and pollutant pressures can damage meadows. The disappearance of a meadow is not just the loss of green leaves; It is the damage to a complex habitat that retains sediment and provides space for many living things. For this reason, appropriate anchoring methods and diving habits that do not disturb the habitat are important.

Correct description in the photo

If a diver cannot verify the species and exact location on a meadow photograph, he or she may use a discreet title such as “Aegean Sea seagrass habitat.” It is necessary to avoid generalizations such as “There is one in every bay of Çandarlı” or “There is definitely a fish living here”. If the photo's date and location are recorded, it can be added to the local observation sequence.

Combining the scientific archive with the guest experience

Derin Dalış Merkezi's goal is not to replace scientific institutions, but to convey their data to visitors in understandable language. The meadows documented in a dated manner by Sırrı Hoca and photographers can form valuable visual archives highlighting the need to update official reports.
