Fish of the Gulf of Çandarlı: A Close Look at the Spaniard

Fish of the Gulf of Çandarlı: A Closer Look at the Sparoz. Explore diving culture, preparation and marine life around Çandarlı in the Northern Aegean.

A species in the scientific record: Diplodus annularis

Diplodus annularis, popularly known as sparoz in the Aegean, is among the dominant species of the Çandarlı Bay bottom trawl survey published in 2014. This finding belongs to the 2003–2004 sampling period; It alone does not provide information about current population size or the likelihood of occurrence at each dive site.

Relationship between seagrass and bottom

To understand the distribution of fish species, it is necessary to look not only at the fish itself but also at the structure of the habitat in which it is found. Sandy, muddy, rocky and vegetated areas may offer different feeding and hiding conditions. If there is footage of a sea bream, the location and environmental conditions should also be recorded.

Annotating underwater photographs with a reliable species identification, date of capture, permitted location, and “individual number observed” is more instructive than a flashy but unverifiable species list. Feeding should not be done to change fish behavior.
