The bay behind a number
The few fish you see when looking out to sea in Çandarlı Bay are just a glimpse of a much larger ecosystem. The research published by Ege University researchers Okan Özaydın, Sencer Akalın and Dilek İlhan in 2014 provides a historical photograph of the bottom-dwelling fish communities of the gulf. A total of 60 fish species, 49 bony and 11 cartilaginous, were recorded in trawl sampling carried out at five stations between March 2003 and 2004.
This number does not mean "60 species can be seen on a Çandarlı dive today". Trawl sampling is a different method than visual observation by a diver on a rocky reef. Moreover, research stations and sampling dates are specific; It does not provide an updated species count for 2026.
Why are scientific names important?
Among the species frequently recorded in the study are Mullus barbatus (red mullet), Citharus linguatula, Diplodus annularis (sparse), Serranus hepatus and Merluccius merluccius. Some are associated with muddy-sandy bottoms. Therefore, it would be wrong to present this list as "guaranteed creatures" at the diving spot. Still, it's a good start to consider how many different habitats fish species use in a common geography.
What can the diver document?
When taking photographs, noting the date, approximate location's allowable level, depth range, and habitat type makes the observation valuable. Seeing the same species in different seasons is more meaningful than claiming a trend based on a one-time observation. If you are not sure about the species definition, the phrase "species will be verified" should be used; rarity and conservation status should be checked.
A new underwater archive for Çandarlı
By bringing together dated records from underwater photographers and instructors, Derin Dalış Merkezi can create an observation gallery that does not replace scientific research but helps the public understand nature. Keeping historical data separate from current observation is the basis of the reliability of this archive.
