Flight after diving: Things to know when planning a trip

DAN guidance on flying after diving, surface intervals and planning a multi-day trip. Discuss your travel itinerary with your instructor.

Why does the diving plan change on the last day of the holiday?

Diving trips are often combined with a ferry, plane or road trip. The pressure of the aircraft cabin and going to high altitudes can affect the risk of dissolved gases in the body after diving. Therefore, transportation time should not be planned independently of the last dive.

General ranges published by DAN

Divers Alert Network (DAN) recommends a surface interval of at least 12 hours before flight after a single dive that does not require a decompression stop, and at least 18 hours after multiple dives in one day or multiple dive days. Dives that involve mandatory decompression require longer time; DAN's current practice tables contain reference to 24 hours or more. These are general recommendations, not safe hours that guarantee that the risk is completely eliminated. A longer range can be selected depending on the person and diving profile.

What does it mean for ferry travel?

Ferry travel does not create the same pressure conditions as flying. However, having a ferry ticket does not make post-diving symptoms unimportant; Land journeys to altitude after diving should also be taken into consideration. The guest coming to Çandarlı must share his entire travel plan, especially the flight time, if any, with the instructor in advance.

Do not continue the journey if there are symptoms

If symptoms such as unusual pain, neurological symptoms, or shortness of breath develop after diving, it is necessary to postpone the flight and seek urgent medical evaluation. It is a better plan to leave enough time rather than cramming the last day of the trip into diving.
