Bay of Yenişakran and Çandarlı: 2017–2018 fisheries survey

What the Yenişakran coastal fisheries survey tells about the bottom life of the Çandarlı Bay.

Different ways to understand a bay's fish communities

The underwater life of Çandarlı Bay cannot be understood only from diving photographs. A study published in 2020 in the Aegean Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences evaluated the seasonal catch composition using 2017–2018 records of a coastal fisherman in Yenişakran. In the study, it is stated that fishing with gillnets and longlines is carried out in a depth range of approximately 5-25 meters on sandy and seagrass covered grounds.

What does it say and what does it not say?

The study is not a live observation list of a diving tour; It examines a fisherman's catch records for certain periods. Therefore, we cannot conclude that "this kind of guarantee is seen in diving". Likewise, catch composition alone does not equal the conservation status of a species or its population in the entire bay. However, it provides a different window into fishing pressures and habitat diversity.

Reading along with his 60 genre studies in 2014

The research published by Özaydın et al. in 2014 had previously reported 60 species from bottom trawl sampling conducted at five stations in 2003–2004. The method, time and scope of the two studies are different. It would be scientifically inaccurate to draw an easy “species increased/decreased” line between them. Comparable sampling areas and methods are required to assess real change.

Why is this information on a dive site?

What is important for visitors interested in underwater is not only to see a beautiful view, but also to get to know the environment correctly. A diver who reads past reports can better understand the delicate relationship between fishing, coastal use and conservation in the same area. That's why our Çandarlı guide includes scientific sources as well as diving spots.
